I did that with "The End of the Dream" by Philip Wylie. The author had already been dead seven years by the time I read the first time in the late 1970's. Read it again recently and was struck by how cynical he was about life and society. It still scared the crap out of me though.

not necessarily finish a book for that to happen, but read one very graphic scene from a book that made me cry. It was a passage from the book "From a Buick 8" by Stephen King.
