"You can mull it over. There's time to decide. Whether or not you agree to the plan, you will clash repeatedly with the demons and their corruption—you've already witnessed what they can do." This caught her off guard. "Are you talking about Tallboy's sister?" "That girl—Emily—she was no mere corrupted human. She was transforming into one of them." Her blood ran cold. "A demon?" "That's right. That black ooze was no mere darkness—it was the basis of the reconstruction of her body. Why do you think it was so different? Had you let it run its course, that girl would have been something else entirely within a matter of days." He eyed her face, almost taking pleasure in her terror. "You know, they knew this already." "Who? The doctors?" "Oh, them? Definitely. The doctors, the nurses, and all members of the Holy Ministry." There was something about his smile that made her uneasy. She suddenly wasn't sure if she should believe him or not.

Tallboys comes from a village of woodcutters, carpenters, and botanists. Gossamer, in Volkran county, was deep in Everold forest. Everyone knew the land by heart and respected the nature that surrounded them.

One month ago, the corruption crept in. Now, Gossamer is gone.

As the saintess increased her martial training—which included archery, swordsmanship, and horseback riding—she learned to effectively infuse her strikes with holy power. It wasn't the outcome the Holy Ministry wanted, but they would take what they could get. A saintess that could fight, even if it was with blades and bows, was worth more than one who could not. Vicar Reinhold praised Lord Frederick for being able to bring out the best in the saintess, but he refused to take any of the credit. Despite them spending more time together, the relationship between the lieutenant and the saintess grew strained. He was even more aloof than usual with her, would run out as soon as their training sessions ended, and avoided eye contact. This was increasingly distressful for Aurelia, who felt like she had done nothing wrong, but thought she must have done something for him to act that way. Even so, she couldn't bring herself to ask. They would have been stuck in that awkward stage if it weren't for the intrusion of a rear company soldier one day. "Tallboys, stop!" an officer called out, trying uselessly to stop a young man from entering the training yard. "Saintess!" Tallboys shouted. "Saintess, when are you going to do something?" Aurelia turned to the young man, visibly confused. "Huh?" "Aren't you supposed to save us? When are you going to do something?" Tallboys cried, tears running down his face.

the saintess struggles to learn offensive techniques so her only "use" is healing--something Vicar Reinhold disapproves of. The way he treats her, the way the ministry treats her, the way the people treat her--it all highlights her objectification.

"Good evening, Your Reverence," Nicander greeted. "What may I aid you with tonight?" Vicar Reinhold turned from the dark window, a deep frown contorting his otherwise handsome face. "You know very well why I am here, Your Royal Highness. The saintess has yet to blossom. I provided you her schedule, tasks, direction—all in the hopes of boosting your influence over His Majesty. But you have done nothing with my gift." "My apologies, Vicar, but it has only been three weeks. She is blessed—yes—but she is still human." The vicar grunted. "You do not oversee her directly as I do on the weekends. You simply delegate to your staff, the tutors. She is languishing. Her melancholic demeanor upsets the faithful and her lack of progress upsets the ministry." "Is healing not the saintess' primary function? Why must she learn offensive techniques so soon?" The vicar held his tongue. Nicander raised a brow. "Vicar Reinhold? Do you wish to tell me something?" "It is not something to bother yourself with, Sir." "Please, let that be for me to decide." "As you wish." Vicar Reinhold cleared his throat. "Weeks before the saintess appeared, the ministry received reports out of Everold Forest about an incoming wave of corruption. Last week, there was a sighting of a beast with multiple eyes. Since then, nothing. Our Everold outpost has gone dark."

He suddenly looked up at the sunless sky as if analysing something. "Well, it's about time to go. Have you had your fill of answers? Do you feel any better about the situation you're in?" She wasn't sure how she felt. While she finally got some answers, there was something suspicious about the God of Dawn that she couldn't quite pinpoint. As a result, she wasn't sure if the answers she got were actually truths. "It's healthy to doubt me," he said. "You should. I've kept some things from you." He laughed in a way that showed just how trifling he thought this whole thing was. "I can see the future, you know. It's the one ability I've witheld from you. Why? Because if you could see it as I can, then you probably wouldn't want to continue down this path—your only path. I know you, and you are weak. You can't be trusted, but you're all I have." He shrugged as the sky shattered. He waved goodbye as darkness poured in like a tidal wave. It filled the space like a snowglobe until nothing else was left.
