🌱🏛️ Kaveh's composure cracked the moment Layla mentioned quicksand, inundated with painful memories of his father. Naturally, Alhaitham noticed.

This is what happened once they got home that night.

Aaa thank you so much!!! :3 I feel like it's a very fitting metaphor because rocks are stubborn and sometimes a pain in the ass but also very stable and sturdy. And that's what Kaveh needs

I'll post a part 2 about the next pt of the quest soon! If it's short enough it'll go here, & if not it'll go on ao3.

But I'm also gonna do a 3rd part given all the deshret/nabu references hehe - that will be long (& rated E lol) so it'll def go on ao3!

A soft sigh escaped him in response. Kaveh wasn’t ready to face the day that lay before them, not really. But with Alhaitham there, somehow the desert felt a little less vast, and the past a little less heavy.

He didn’t remember drifting off, only the steady rhythm of Alhaitham’s thumb tracing slow, languid circles against his shoulder.

Just before sleep claimed him, however, something warm ghosted against Kaveh’s temple - a kiss soft enough to hide behind the guise of a dream.

Kaveh hummed faintly, a silent 'thank you,' eyes closing as exhaustion melted into tentative warmth.

The man once wedged like a thorn in his youth now sat beside him like a boulder - immovable, infuriating, but solid enough to lean against all the same.

He felt Alhaitham exhale slowly against his hair. “Then I’ll be right there. You can use my antisocial tendencies as an excuse if you need to. I’ll pretend to be overwhelmed and we can leave the group for a little while.”

“What if I panic tomorrow?” The question escaped Kaveh before he could smother it against Alhaitham’s shirt, a whisper steeped in unconcealable fear. “When we’re in the desert with everyone else... what if I - what if I can’t do it?”

The touch was nothing, really - and yet it undid him. Before Kaveh could stop himself, he leaned in, resting his forehead against Alhaitham’s shoulder in wordless surrender.

The world went still, filled only by the subdued hush of music and their gentle, shared breaths.

Hesitantly, Kaveh yielded to the invitation, letting Alhaitham’s arm curl around his shoulders with the ease of something practiced in another life.

“But -”

“Rest, Kaveh.”

The firmness of his tone carried something almost imperceptibly soft - an insistence that spoke louder than sympathy ever could. And Kaveh, too desperate for solace and too weary to deny Alhaitham’s embrace, gave in.

Certain he’d already lingered too long, Kaveh’s eyes lifted warily toward Alhaitham. “We should pack for tomorrow,” he said hoarsely.

“No.” Alhaitham’s hand caught his wrist as he tried to rise, drawing him gently back down against the cushions. “You should rest.”

But instead, Alhaitham reached for a blanket draped across the back of the divan, shook it loose, and spread it over them both. He even set a small pillow beside them for Mehrak, who promptly set her light to a comfortable dim and nestled close.

For a while, neither spoke. When Kaveh’s hand eventually steadied enough to lift the cup again, he half expected Alhaitham to get up - to decide that Kaveh, no longer visibly in crisis, required no further tending.

Equal parts insult and reassurance. How quintessentially Alhaitham.

Still, there was a certain comfort in Alhaitham’s refusal to coddle him - in the unspoken conviction that Kaveh’s pain deserved to be met with truth, not pity. (15/26)

Kaveh released a breath that trembled on its way out. “I... I guess.”

“Besides, you were five,” Alhaitham said steadily. “He made his own decision. It’s not something you’d blame another child for, so it’s absurd to flatter your five-year-old self with that much power.”

The words struck deeper than Kaveh expected - not because they were profound, but because they were his. From a man who so rarely offered consolation at all, Alhaitham somehow always gave it precisely when it mattered.

“I just... I thought I’d stopped reacting like this,” Kaveh whispered. “It’s been years. I know it was my fault, but I should at least be able to hear the word without -”

“Grief doesn’t expire,” Alhaitham interrupted, voice low but firm.

He only nodded, unable to trust his voice.

“It’s understandable,” Alhaitham said.

Though it wasn’t the sort of comfort most people would provide, the calm certainty in his voice soothed something raw and small inside Kaveh’s chest.

Kaveh stared blankly into the steam rising lazily from his tea, his lower lip caught between his teeth as if he could hold back the quiver. But the memory surged anyway - his father’s back framed in the doorway, a promise to return that never found its way back home.

“You’re thinking about your father,” Alhaitham said bluntly.

No hesitation, no soft phrasing - just truth, bare and impossible to dodge.

He accepted the tea, startled by how unsteady his fingers felt against Alhaitham’s calm grip.

One hand curling around the edge of the cup to keep it steady, Alhaitham settled beside him and waited until Kaveh managed a shaky sip before setting both mugs on the table.

A faint symphony of instrumental strings filled their home - barely a melody, just enough to keep the edges of silence from caving in.

But by the time Alhaitham returned with two steaming mugs, Kaveh’s mask had already begun to crumble.

Mehrak floated after Alhaitham as he crossed into the kitchen, humming quietly at his shoulder as if awaiting orders.

“Music, please,” Alhaitham murmured. “Track ten.”

With a soft beep, she obliged.

The gentle command left no room for protest. Too tired to argue anyway, Kaveh sank onto the divan with a huff as guilt and gratitude knotted together like threads pulled too tight in his chest.
