An incredible sentence from Tidal Lock by Lindsay Hill. This book cuts very deep.
TRAINS We traveled all day through Sweden by train to Lake Ostesund and my father was hungry and I was tired and he went off to eat ta restaurant and a couple began to sort of flirt with him and the wife was beautiful and silent and the husband talked incessantly and some soft music was playing and the husband said to to my father She wants to dance with you and they danced and she kissed him softly on the lips and then they invited him to come to their house for the night and what if he'd accepted and one thing had led to another and the three of them had really fallen in love and then traveled to Norway and south to Denmark and then to Morocco and rented a rambling house pressed against the mountains and the years had gone by in a blur of tea and smoke and spicy lamb and I'd never seen him again and I'd awakened from my nap and had nowhere to look for him and I was desperate and searching and I didn't ever forget him but I didn't ever find him and his life was just so sweet that all that had gone before just didn't hold him and not being in touch became a habit and then a preference and then a necessity and I grew old and imagined him long dead and the last time I saw him I was just lying down on an ordinary afternoon to take a nap.
