we’ve been making an effort to visit more museums this year, here are some of my favourite artworks so far!!
venice beach oil derricks at night by john decker (1933). this is an impressionist oil painting featuring a dark bridge silhouetted against bright teal gas lamps that illuminate the los angeles river. industrial structures line the banks and a lone man walks across the bridge. bull profile series (1 through 6) by roy lichtenstein (1973). there are six individual screenprints/linecuts featuring a bull, beginning with a black and white realistic rendering. with each profile, the bull becomes more and more abstracted into lines and curves, bright saturated primary colours. saint andrew by massacio (1426). a gold-leaf altar panel featuring a portrait of saint amdrew in a green robe, carrying a book and cross. he gazes out of frame, face long and drooping. the robes are rendered with clear contrast and shapes to create bulk, weight, and depth. the shuttlecock by berthe morisot (1888). an impressionist painting in bright pastel shades of blue, green, and warm pinks. a young girl in a pink dress sits in centre frame, sun on her face, holding a feathered shuttlecock in her lap. she tilts her head towards the viewer in a faint smile. in the background, an older woman and a young child sit at the border of the lawn and foliage.
