Another thing to address would be the true alignment charting. Lawful-Evil is best explained as selfless-selfish. Lawful-Chaotic is better as a degree of ethical code. A chaotic neutral character will frequently sway between acting for the good of others and themselves without much regard for a code

Or something like a specific backstory tie that would pull their character toward heroics

Sounds like your issue was in not getting the players properly (child murder dude) and not establishing a background requirement. Always review backstories to make sure they have motivators you can exploit. Maybe a family member or friend who got caught up in the carnage
