Writing about Jack & Elisha Sinkler of Pateley Bridge: Poachers, Prisoners, Folk Heroes. 👩🏻‍💻 Yorkshire dialect enthusiast 🗯 Deep in research mode 📚

Been busy working on my little local history exhibition. Having to do everything as cheaply as possible, because I'm paying for it all myself. Tried to find funding but...nowt. 😐

Despite having £0 to spend on it, seems to be turning out okay.

On this day in 1844, the convict ship carrying poacher Jack Sinkler left England bound for Norfolk Island. The ship's surgeon for the voyage was Benjamin Bynoe, the man who nursed Charles Darwin back to health aboard HMS Beagle.

On this day in 1833 Elisha Sinkler was sentenced to hang. The 26-year old poacher from Pateley Bridge was locked up in York Castle prison to await his fate.

Here's a Yorkshire Dales dialect word for you: brant.

I live up a bank side that can be described as "gay brant" (meaning very steep)

Started out as a casual dip into an old interest but accidentally morphed into a book. While I continue to work on my research and write up the book, I’ve put together a little website (www.kjhannam.co.uk). Here’s the blurb for anyone who might be interested:

Last year, I went down a bit of a local history rabbit-hole, looking into Jack Sinkler and his brother Elisha, the famous poachers from Pateley Bridge. I’d known about the Sinklers since I was a child, but got engrossed in their story again last February.

Here's a Yorkshire Dales dialect word to start the weekend: "gan" meaning to go.

A few bonus words in the examples for you: "til" = to, "mun" = must, "brig" = bridge

Snow's turning to rain. Brought a branch down though, so that's a job to sort later. Got me thinking about how we pronounce it "snaw", and my Dad would say "snew" instead of snowed.

Haven't posted any Yorkshire dialect for a bit, so here's one you might find useful. Plenty of fond folk about, doing fond things.

People in Pateley Bridge and Ripon put together a petition of 1,000+ names, pleading for clemency.

Elisha was reprieved the night before he was due to hang, his sentence commuted to transportation to Australia for life. Spoiler: he didn't stay though, he escaped back to Yorkshire!

Today (18th Sept) in 1831, Pateley Feast Day, police came to arrest poacher Elisha Sinkler in Heathfield, nr. Pateley Bridge. A fight broke out, a constable was injured, and Elisha escaped.

Captured 2 years later, he had the misfortune to find himself up against a notorious "hanging judge".

Local history is fantastic. Just made someone's day by telling her that her husband is directly related to the 19th century poachers I'm writing about. She was so delighted!

Looks like I'm doing a genealogy lesson at next week's local coffee morning now! 😆

I'm no expert on Old West firearms, but the extremely long barrel of Wyatt's pistol (get your mind out of the gutter), I assume is meant to be a Colt Buntline, which I thought was disproved? Still a great series though.

Maybe one for Jonathan at The Royal Armouries to identify.

I did notice a few accents that didn't sound American to my ear. Then one bloke turns up who was definitely in Doctor Who and Merlin, so quick IMDb check...main cast are mostly English and Aussie.

Binged Netflix's "Wyatt Earp and the Cowboy War". Thoroughly enjoyed it, right up my street!

Good narration by Ed Harris, interesting historians, and entertaining dramatisations. Doesn't cover murkier aspects of the Earps, but series is concentrated on a particular period so fair enough.

The future is today.

One minute you're watching DS9 when you're supposed to be concentrating on your maths homework, next minute that "far off" future is...today.

I feel like I drank out of the wrong grail.

Yesterday was 193 years since the scuffle with a gamekeeper that saw brothers Jack & Elisha Sinkler become outlaws. These two local lads narrowly avoided the noose, were transported to Australia but remarkably both of them made it back home to Yorkshire again.

Perfect film for the Bank Holiday on iPlayer.

Fun fact: Yul Brynner rides James Stewart's favourite horse, Pie.

Woken up by gale force winds battering the farmhouse this morning. This seems like an appropriate word for today. It's definitely feeling backendish! 🎃🍂
