This is a first for me, but apparently a common species. Bee-mimic scarab on a daisy flower. Photo taken in southern Ontario, Canada.

ID Help: This specimen was found in a stormwater management pond (SWMP) in Ontario. It was found at 1-m depth, but given the dynamic water-levels of SWMPs, it could be an emergent plant rather than a submergent (which is what we are focused on). TIA for ID help. Cc @jolatimore.bsky.social

This campus pollinator garden brings me a tiny slice of joy each day as I walk past it. It’s not perfect and has some challenges, but seeing the milkweed coming into bloom offers a dash of hope and reprieve from all the things.

Very proud of my research group who presented their research at #SCAS_SCSA on varied topics from water quality to plankton to research coproduction to invasive species. No wonder our lab tagline is “Everything but fish”.

We are currently seeking a MSc domestic student (i.e. Canadian citizen or permanent resident) to join a cohort of newly recruited HQP. The project will focus on developing and testing novel stream biomonitoring methods incorporating eDNA to assay community membership from microbes to fish. These rapid bioassessment techniques will be tested against traditional approaches in their ability to produce functional, community and multi-trophic indicators of ecosystem integrity and biodiversity along a gradient of impact recovery. The student will be hosted at Laurentian University (Dr. Brie Edwards) and co-supervised by Dr. Erik Emilson (Natural Resources Canada). Field work will begin in Spring of 2025 and will be conducted in the Sudbury area. As such we are recruiting a student interested in starting May 2025. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in aquatic ecology and an interest in benthic bioindicators, molecular techniques, and population and community responses to environmental change. Quantitative skills in statistical analysis are desired but can be provided through training programs at the respective institutions. Interested students should send a CV, cover letter expressing interest and relevant skills, as well as a copy of unofficial transcripts to Brie Edwards (bedwards2@laurentian.ca). Please include “CRADLES graduate interest” as the subject line.

December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on violence against women in Canada. This day marks the anniversary of the murders of 14 young women at l'Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal. They died because they were women.
