The promise, “that you may live long in the land that I’m giving you,” in the fifth commandment, “honor your father and mother” (Ex 20:12), is specifically about Israel dwelling in the promised land, not a promise of old age. (Also, this meme is overused.)

Don't overlook the Exegetical Summary Series. It doesn't get enough attention, but it's a go-to resource. It surveys all the major exegetical issues and positions in a text, often covering more issues than your average commentary. logos.com/product/1978...

I love contemporary Biblical commentaries. But when I have theological questions of the text, I often find the older commentaries to be the most helpful.
