Citizen science was hinted at in a presentation by students of Mary McKillop Catholics Regional College when discussing bushfire management in Australia @kidsconference 2025. A network of drones, registered by locals, to provide early warning and fire spread monitoring was mooted. Great idea!

The 3rd talk about Antarctica @kidsconference.bsky.social 2025 tackled the challenges in providing any future Antarctic-based city with renewable energy. The challenges suggest it might be best not to have an Antarctic civilisation, and to prioritise renewable energy in existing cities. Yes!

The placebo effect was the subject of Kyabram College students’ presentation @kidsconference.bsky.social 2025. This talk engendered more discussion than any other topic today, with lots of questions about the ethics of using placebo medications.

Students of Cornish College came to the rapid conclusion that building floating cities was not a permanent solution to rising seas. Instead, as presented to @kidsconference.bsky.social, they came up with the concepts of floating balloons for CO2 capture, and boats to support sea weed production.

It started with the important issue of endangered animals across the world and finished with the important lessons about being reflective, engaging in dialogue and using reason! That was the journey presented by students of Bayside P-12 College @kidsconference.bsky.social 2025.

Students of Academy of Mary Immaculate discussed their development of a safety app designed for women @kidsconference.bsky.social 2025. Partnering with Melbourne police and the Salvation Army, these students built the app around the concepts of safe spaces, incidents and insights. Inspiring!

@kidsconference.bsky.social 2025 doesn’t shirk from big questions such as ‘what shapes our world?’ Students of University High took an adaptive approach to curiosity, refining inquiry by thinking critically along all stages of research. Australian, Pacific and US examples were given. Great stuff!

The second talk on the Antarctic today at @kidsconference.bsky.social 2025 deals with the Antarctic Treaty by students of Melba Copland High. The treaty could be breached as supplies of oil, gas and minerals are temptations that would see not just the degradation of the Antarctic but also the world.

They’re dreaming! Well not quite, but students of Killester College did study the topic of lucid dreaming @kidsconference.bsky.social 2025. A great lesson discussed by the students was the mistakes made in their methodology and the adaptation they made. Learning from mistakes is key to all research!

The serious topic of social impacts on Antarctica was discussed by students of Pakenham Secondary College @kidsconference.bsky.social 2025. The health of the Antarctic and the planet are integrally related. Wider commitment to the Antarctic Treaty would be a good start to protecting the world.

In the humanities session of @kidsconference.bsky.social 2025, it was interesting to hear students of Blackburn High raise the issue of the fall in cinema attendance due to alternative platforms which keep people at home. Are tie-ins between streaming service shows and spinoffs at cinema the answer?

How great was Dr Lydia Pethic, our only adult speaker at today’s @kidsconference.bsky.social 2025 in Melbourne! Speaking about the foodweb and how we can play our part to protect and strengthen it, Lydia’s presentation emphasised just how important our individual roles are. We are all change makers!

Over 100 kids participating in Kids’ Conference 2025 from schools across Australia and the globe. We’ve run events in Australia, Singapore, Nairobi, Oxford, and (virtually) Antarctica this year and today’s conference highlights new and some of the year’s best projects. @kidsconference.bsky.social

Today I’m at @kidsconference.bsky.social 2025 in Melbourne. This is our sixth event for the year, and we’re all set to learn so much from school children of both primary and high schools. The KC tag-line is ‘kids teaching teachers’. Both science and humanities presentations are involved. Buckle up!

Well, this was certainly unexpected. It seems I’m a finalist to receive an Alumni of the Year Award of the illustrious Charles Sturt University. CSU played a major role in stitching together the government, community, science and business roles of my life, proving community engagement is vital.

I spent today with two of Spain’s leading rabbit researchers visiting Australia, where rabbits (originating from Spain via England) have had a devastating impact on our environment and agriculture. Some fascinating insights from both researchers as well as our CAIRO hosts.

USA’s McKenzie Hawkins (No. 1) scored three tries in a losing side playing the Australian women’s rugby team. It was a great match to watch on a weekend full of sports for me.

Been wondering for years why we’ve been hiding the kimono and obi in a draw. Finally found the solution.

The guardian dog which sits in front of me at the football games wasn’t too keen on how our team was playing. He fell asleep in the second half. I could only empathize.

Well that’s one less invasive species fish, carp, in the waterways near Gundagai. A refreshing morning shared with two grandpirates and a few cattle. Carp are responsible for much of the ecosystem destruction in south east Australia. Cattle access to waterways doesn’t help, destroying riparian veg.

Michelle Heyman, Canberra United and the Australian Matilda’s centre forward, comes off the field as the first person to reach 200 games in the Australian Women’s A-League. I could almost reach down from my seat to pat her on the back. Congratulations Hayley; an inspiration to girls and boys alike!

I do love a good dumpling. If you’re in Sydney, try out Mr Wong’s down near Circular Quay.
