I think it's worth noting that this isn't a one-sided issue. There was a lot of toxic negativity surrounding the mere concepts of Samus riding a motorcycle in a big open area, touting them as "cringe" and "open world slop" respectively.

It sometimes feels like game critics only care for game scores to be imitations of blockbuster movie scores, purely serving a status quo rather than being something legitimately memorable.

Ultimately it's Mario Kart, it's still an inherently great multiplayer and party game, but I def feel a bit let down by it.
