I couldn’t say it didn’t make me anxious, because it did - Seeing the light was the most upset I got all day, pretty much regardless of what the day held. But there was something else in it, too, something irresistible. I wanted to feel the way I did when I saw the light. It made me feel as if I was right to feel the dull, gnawing sense of unhappiness that had been hovering over me for as long as I could remember. text that reads: I slept in the engine access tube that Avital and I first spent time in that night. The cool metal against my back and the flickering red and green lights in the dark brought me back to the feeling of watching the sparkling collected electronics in the massive empty tunnels back home, back to the slippery dreams of fairies slowly appearing in the haloes of the LEDs. I was always fortunate enough to have a place to sleep at night but some of the other children didn’t. I would tell my mother I was sleeping at a friend’s place tonight, careful never to say a friend’s house, loathe as I was to lie to my mother, and we would play games and sing songs that echoed down the pipes for hours and hours until at last we put our lights out and the darkness engulfed us. Save for the lights of the handheld devices we’d found, a nightlight that the older children begrudgingly allowed us. And there we were, two children back to back. Even with all that I had seen by the time I was eleven, dead bodies and dried blood, I was certain we were safe. Someone older was always watching us and I knew as I watched the soft contours of their face in the red and green light that no danger would come to us. Nothing changes a person’s vision like aging does. The lights then looked so bright and magical, and now they looked clinical and dim. The tubes back home had been gigantic, and now in this wobbly, awkward body I was claustrophobic in the metal. And those guardians we had, they couldn’t have been any older than I was now. I’d thought they were so grown-up and tough. Looking back now, I could see how ridiculous it was that I ever thought they could protect me. Maybe they could try. But if the cops had shown up or some thief had tried to rob us there wouldn’t have been anything they could do. They were just kids. We all were.

I fell silent again. He didn't need anything in return, I realized. Helping us was all he wanted - He just needed the say so to overstep the regulations, regulations the Chancellor had very likely put in place to begin with. Part of me wondered why he had to go to me at all. He was so powerful, it was easy to think he could get anything he wanted. But then, at the end of the day, Genesis was still a shadow. It could not function without someone to cast it. He wanted that someone to be me.
