i think it's reasonable and perhaps advisable to try and find common ground with someone on your ideological side... up to a point. to be clear, zen has long since passed that point. i was giving up hope when i posted my comment about it, and by this point in the convo just above, it was gone.

i don't disagree at all. but i tend to think it's more helpful to dig into the root of the problem. my goal, though at this point not with much hope, is to peel back on that reactive fear until we can all see past the gauze and remember we're on the same side and believe mostly the same shit

i attribute it much more to being angry and scared at the state of the world and the people scrabbling to take violent and malevolent charge of it, and understanding that we can't defeat them through wishy-washy moderatism--then lashing out at someone they wrongly interpreted to be on that side.

it sounds like your actual beliefs are that the worst republicans are irredeemable monsters and not worth reasoning with, that republicans reach this place through human fallibility, and that while you don't necessarily take offense to OP's language, it isn't your language of choice either.

sincerely, i'd say this is a pretty wild misquote. you yourself admitted that you much prefer "monsters" to "animals" and all the other language OP used, which is the specific language molotovsforbridges was referring to. what they took offense to isn't at all what you claimed they took offense to.

i understand where you're coming from but consider it a generalization based in ideals rather than a recognition of facts on the ground about who is calling whom what and why. the reason it matters that we remember nazis are human is because if we don't, we fail to take concrete preventive steps

you both might want to consider that perhaps the real problem with this "cleanse the animals" language is that it permits us to absolve nazis of making human choices. 30% of america weren't born nazis, they slid that way over the last several years. under the right circumstances, anyone can slide.
