Discover the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences at King's College London!

We're into all things science, and proud of our Chemistry, Engineering, Informatics, Mathematics and Physics departments.
Dr Miao Guo's work focuses on transforming how we design and optimise processes with living systems and Dr Nicola Bailey focuses on how technology and humans come together. Both re-engineer engineering by finding that collaborative place between humans and nature, and science.

We asked our Engineers how their work relates to this year's theme of 're-engineering engineering' at King’s – and here’s what musician and engineer Professor Elaine Chew and anthroengineer Dr Michael Berthaume had to say!

‘Should we learn anything anymore? The answer is yes’

After his packed-out lecture Stephen Wolfram joined us to discuss the future of AI, science and scientists🧑‍🔬

We chatted about the ‘superpower’ of computational thinking and the AI that keeps him up at night👻

Thank you so much to Professor Domokos, Dr Kumin, Dr Mehdi, and to all of our attendees for joining us as we accepted our Gömböc.
October 29, 2025 at 11:38 AM
📐 We closed the event with a talk from King's own Dr Mehdi Yazdi about geometry research happening in our department - including Borromean ring research!
October 29, 2025 at 11:38 AM
📐 The specially commissioned Gömböc is number 1829, a nod to the founding year of King's.
October 29, 2025 at 11:38 AM
📐 King's Head of Mathematics, Professor Anne Taormina, received King's unique Gömböc from the Hungarian Ambassador to the Court of St James's, Dr Ferenc Kumin, saying "It is to the credit of the Gömböcs, that it speaks to mathematicians, but also to artists."
October 29, 2025 at 11:38 AM
📐 Professor Gábor Domokos, Hungarian mathematician and engineer, spoke about the discovery of the Gömböc - including how a holiday was spent collecting and categorising 2,000 beach pebbles, and how studies of tortoise stabilisation lead to the formation of this fascinating and beautiful shape!
October 29, 2025 at 11:38 AM
The Department of Mathematics at King's College London is delighted to share the installation of a geometric discovery, right here at King's!

This week, we hosted a virtual talk from Professor Gábor Domokos and were presented with our very own Gömböc from Hungarian Ambassador, Dr Ferenc Kumin.

Our mathematicians spent the weekend at Green Man Festival, teaming up with Cambridge researchers in the Einstein’s Garden zone.

From black holes to cosmic expansion, curious minds of all ages got hands-on with spacetime, warped images with gravity and even learned how to build a Universe.🪐

If you're worried about a windy day, spare a thought for our Engineering undergrads!💨

They use wind tunnels to measure drag & lift on an aerofoil to understand the effects of angle of attack and wind speed, so they can design & manufacture a small-scale wind turbine.🌪️
