For finding the holes, it's honestly just practice 🤷♀️ Thinner/darker yarn definitely makes it more challenging though. I started crochet earlier this year and struggled with the holes too. But, once you do it more, it becomes easier to read the yarn if that makes sense. Also try stretching your work!
