So I’ve gone from pretty much not caring about the last season of Stranger Things to really not caring about it.

If you’re looking for history that could repeat look no further back than the 1990 purge of non-Serbians from the JDA. If they succeed in their purge then what comes next will be “ethnic cleansing” and something like the siege of Sarajevo on one or two selected blue cities.

According to the UK Royal Mail when the de minimus exemption ends on Aug 29 the US will require foreign vendors to calculate the US duties, charge that to their customers (or, they suggest, absorb the cost!!) & remit duties with shipment. Get used to overseas vendors deciding not to ship to the US.

Wait you’re telling me that Brussels Sprouts LITERALLY tasted awful when I was a kid and I didn’t just magically start liking them as an adult?????

In 2025 who pays a couple hundred bucks to go to a concert and spend the whole show trying to make a shitty video that nobody will ever watch. He stepped right in front of me at the start of the show to do this. Don’t be this ass****.

So the city of Burlington VT is temporarily changing the name of their main shopping street to Canada Street. Can you all stop doing this cringey shit?

You fucked up, every single one of you, forgiveness will take a long time. If you can behave like an adult for a week, come visit, seriously.

Jumping German Jesus the people who buy used stuff off the internet are a piece of work. If you want stuff in like new condition with guarantees then just go pay retail prices.

Look, if you are a business, especially a small business, impacted by the crash in Canadian tourism I feel for you, but do not bother with advertising, promotions or incentives aimed at Canadians. It’s a waste of money, the Canadians who do come would have anyway, otherwise you cannot change minds

In case you haven’t been watching closely, the DJIA and the S&P are both down slightly YTD. The TSX composite (Canada) is up over 3% and the DAX is up 18%.

Q for Russian politics wonks, what happens when P dies? Is there a clear successor in the wings (Medvedev?) or does the whole thing turn into a mad scramble for control?

There’s only one country that calls it victory day although if memory serves they consider it to be May 9th.

I went to a wine tasting tonight, led by a professional somm who works at one of the cities high end steakhouses. Before <this> he sold 80% California cab, 10% Bordeaux, 5% Brunello and 5% the rest of the world. Now he sells 40% Bordeaux, 40% Brunello, 15% rest of the world and 5% California. 🧵

Half of business owners on this Toronto street estimated that more than 25% of their customers arrived by car.

In fact, it was 4%.

And the % of customers who who walked or cycled? 72%.

Retailers routinely overestimate the # of “car customers.” Via @carltonreid.com www.forbes.com/sites/carlto...

At the barbershop and another bloke was also waiting, on his mobile the entire time. He asked someone to charge an expense to a different project “they’ll never notice it there, just don’t itemize it”, & asked a vendor modify an invoice so he could cover a screwup. Who does this stuff in public?

There have recently been many suggested tests for detecting fake Canadians but the best one is to ask what should we consider to be Canada’s unofficial anthem. There are perhaps a dozen acceptable answers and almost no chance a faker is going to guess even one.

In the last 24 hours you can feel a shift in the zeitgeist in Canada from “we get that it’s not all Americans” to “fuck’em they can all burn”.

1. I praise them regularly because they deserve it. Lipad.ca - the fully searchable record of Canadian House of Commons debates - is such a treasure for researchers who want to search Canadian Parliamentary debates in a user-friendly way. Used it today to review Joe Clark's final days in the House.

This is the Food & Drink magazine, a publication that the liquor stores in Ontario give away, funded by advertising by alcohol producers. The new issue dropped this morning and there are atypically almost no US products in here. Clearly today’s product purge has been a consideration for a while.
