Neither could remain credible alternatives for very long if Firefox went under. They're still indirectly dependent on Mozilla's funding. Switching to them doesn't fix the long term problems.

(Yes, they'd still exist, but there's no way they could keep up with even Safari, much less Chrome)

That doesn't sound right. Pretty sure screen readers use the underlying text exposed by the OS's accessibility features, and don't do OCR of the pixels. I know browsers work that way. I don't think screen readers have done what you describe for decades.
