Contrary to popular belief, there are only four kinds of bats.

One of my favorite quirks of Medieval manuscripts is their tendency to depict historical events using the aesthetics of their own culture and time period, regardless of how far removed from them the events being depicted are

Picture from the French manuscript Peniarth 481 (late 15th-century) meant to be depicting Alexander the Great's marriage to the daughter of Achaemenid Emperor Darius III. The wedding is depicted as if it were a wedding of the age, complete with standard late-15th century French noble dress for all involved, and a Catholic clergyman officiating the union Illustration from the German manuscript Nuremburg Chronicle (1493), meant to be of the Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, but dressed in the standard costume of a scholar of the era Illustration from the Speculum Humanae Salvationis (1360 edition), depicting the legendary Scythian queen Tomyris beheading Achaemenid Emperor Cyrus the Great. Both Cyrus and Tomyris appear and are dressed like generic monarchs from Medieval Germany Late-15th French miniature depicting the Sack of Rome (410) by the Visigoths. The Visigoths are depicted wearing the standard armament of soldiers in Medieval France, and Rome is depicted as a standard - albeit highly urban and prosperous - fortified French city of the era.
