The cover art for my edition: A praying mantis trapped under a plastic cup. Praying mantises are:
1. Only insect that can swivel head 180•
2. Adept at camouflage
3. Swift attacking predators

Females may cannibalize male while mating. Male can continue mating headless.

I am interested in the 3 author presentations juxtaposed: 1. Autobiography as extremity presented as entertainment, 2. Autobiography as mundanity presented as challenge, 3. Text reading without detail.

And the audience doesn’t want to be there. And it’s raining.

“There was a great bank of glass shelves against one wall where hair products stood for sale in pristine rows, and when a lorry passed too close outside it shuddered slightly and the jars and bottles rattled in their places.”

Has anyone discussed the title yet? An outline is a writing/study tool & also the edge/skin of something … like in forensics. I have had a mounting sense of unease as the book has progressed, foreboding. The protagonist as almost a blank. “Outline” is a great double-edged word.

« the tiny flaw in the glass panel that eventually led to its entire collapse under pressure: the actual pressure of the water »

Feels like a metaphor … for the collapsed marriages especially, but really any trusted, beautiful, admired thing/experience that gives way.

« …as well as a small piece of the Parthenon frieze that is still presumed to be missing and that he uses as a soap dish ». What a great detail! So much more damning than even the infidelity and the materialism. And so particular. I think I actually winced. #rachelcusktogether

“The novel…concerns a woman painter whose artistic life is gradually being stifled by her domestic arrangements...” I recently read Nightbitch (Yoder), Yellow Wallpaper (Gilman), & Stepford Wives (Levin). Currently reading A Room of One’s Own (Woolf). Thinking of dreams deferred… #rachelcusktogether

I am beginning to wonder why she is electing to spend so much time with people she seems to find grating, annoying, unpleasant. And what are they seeing in her? Perhaps they enjoy her listening, although if they heard her stream-of-consciousness judgment, they might steer clear #rachelcusktogether
