In March 1990, they illustrated the lack of accessibility by staging the Capitol Crawl, in which people with disabilities pulled themselves up the 100 steps of the Capitol building. A few months later the House passed the ADA by unanimous voice vote and the Senate 76-6. /end

Also, to clarify: I don’t think you necessarily need degrees to do the scientific method or the historical method properly— self-taught “amateurs” can do amazing scholarship. But a great way to learn cutting-edge methodology is working with experts, something college lets you do.
