I watched the first film in full with my friends one night and during the opening shouted "Who are these people?!", because I was really confused by a musical number happening before you learnt any of the character's names.

I think that's one of the better things you can do. They want your attention and they want you to be angry and scared so that it all feels impossible.

I'm aware, but does everyone have to be so pretentious about it? Calling a film in which the problem is that 'stupid people' had too many children a documentary just sounds like a way to make yourself feel smarter, to tell yourself that you haven't fallen for any misinformation.
