Work in progress. I love the structure of fungi and have just started experimenting with how to recreate some of these forms using traditional basketry techniques. This could take quite a while!

Brittle, 2022, paper yarn and bones
Osteoporosis is caused by loss of bone mass, changing the structure of bone tissue. It’s called a “silent” disease because there are typically no symptoms until a bone breaks or one or more vertebrae collapse. More images in comments.

What is Urban?, 2015, leaf prints on paving stones
Trying to deliberately create pavement leaf prints took months: putting wet leaves on paving stones, stomping on them daily, covering them in plastic weighted with stones to stop them blowing away. Process pics in comments.

Death and transition, 2015, felted wool
Before I got into basketry I made sculptural pieces by wet felting. Along with bacteria, fungi are the main agents of decomposition - without them we would be lost under piles of dead plant remains. #fibreart #fungifriends

Puzzle ball, 2018, paper yarn dyed with indigo
Inspired by carved ivory puzzle balls from China, I made a version without animal products. I dyed the paper yarn with indigo of various strengths to produce a colour gradient. #sculpturalbasketry #randomweave #indigo

Bleached, paper yarn, 2022.
Coral bleaching occurs when changes in temperature, light or nutrients cause the coral to expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues, turning them white. Pics show finished piece and wip.

One in five, 2019. Five stylised seedpods woven from paper yarn enclosing wet felted orange "seeds". At the time I made it, one in five plants was forecast to become extinct; now it is one in four. 😩
Close up of some of the seedpods in the comments.

Rebound, 2021. Bindweed. #contemporarybasketry #randomweave #spiral #sculpturalbasketry
I spent hours carefully removing bindweed from gardens and using it to random weave 50 spherical pods. I hung these in an anticlockwise spiral formation to represent how bindweed grows.
