Still processing the week at ncsm/nctm.
So many great presentations, challenging conversations, unexpected surprises, new friends and old connections.
We do important work in math ed, and deserve to come home to these people. A great, great week.

My oldest started talking to me about Planck time and I thought we were about compete for arm strength until he said that Planck distance completely changed his perspective on place value.
I think he’s smarter than me. (But I’m stronger)💪🏻🤪🧠

I have not been in a classroom in 50 days and I think I’m in withdrawal. #myhome #myheartiswithkids

My kid is pretty sure he’s going to pursue a math degree and I keep secretly squealing every time I think about it. Told him he was welcome for making math come alive for him 🤣
Go team math!

What should we draw next?

@themathguru.bsky.social and I have reverse favorite numbers!
Are you team 37 or 73? Which prime is best? 😉
April 9, 2025 at 2:25 PM
Apparently this is how my kid spends time in his Calc class.
April 8, 2025 at 11:41 AM
@themathguru.bsky.social I just listened to the @debatemath.bsky.social episode. You said 73 is a lucky number. Is it a fave for you?
It’s always been mine!

Oldest has moved from “‘I’m thinking engineering” to “Maybe architecture” to “Does anyone just do math all day for a living? Like, solves hard problems all day? I want to do that, but who pays someone for that?”
What’s the answer? He doesn’t want to teach.

My kid is practicing the one type of problem he missed on his first SAT attempt. Do I dare tell him there might be different types of problems altogether this time? 🫣😬

Visited a class this week and did a clothesline math problem string. Student A placed 1/2 between 0 and 1/4 bc “2 is half of 4”. Student B placed 0.5 between 0 and 1/4 bc “it also has a zero”. I love these moments.
Thoughts? Responses to either student?

Fun! My kids are more spatial than me so I’m betting now they’ll find this highly entertaining to compare.

Are you kidding me? I love this kid.
This is what can happen when we hold space for students to think, question, wonder.
Ms. Burns is still the ultimate.
Still processing my division lesson. How do I explain the rule that you have to continue dividing so that for 100 divided by 3 without a context, 33 r1 is correct, not 25 r25?

@berkeleyeverett.bsky.social just caught up with your session with David this week. Thank you for the excellent reminder about Same and Different and sharing some new ways for me to think about recording for choral counts. Well done!
