• Using unorthodox approaches to journalism
• Demonstrating a strong commitment to showcasing social diversity

• Functioning as watchdogs of those in power—whether political, economic, or within traditional media
• Supporting and serving marginalized communities through their journalism

🔍 Moreover, they differentiate themselves from traditional journalists by:

🕵️‍♀️ Key findings show that they perceive their roles as follows:
• Acting as agents of change through diversity-focused journalism
• Serving as educators—for marginalized communities, other media, and broader society
• Tailoring content to the specific informational needs of marginalized communities

💡 Based on 18 in-depth interviews, I found that their emphasis on diversity is not just a reporting angle, but a core element of their professional identity and vision of what journalism should be in contemporary society.

Here, I examined the role orientations of Austrian peripheral journalistic actors who claim to focus on diversity in their reporting. I analyzed how they see their roles within Austrian journalism and how they leverage their focus on diversity to distinguish themselves from traditional news media
