A line in SB 180 is being used by developers to try to bully county commissions in Florida to attempt to weaken environmental protections, rural boundaries, and the right to home rule. Orange County could set a precedent with their vote:

Email the commissioners TODAY (becaus the vote is tomorrow)👇

Hi friends, there’s a proposal to rescind the definition of “harm” under the Endangered Species Act, to make destroying habitat not count as harm. Animals can’t survive without habitat! Submit a public comment before the 19th. You can copy and paste the letter: www.kimheise.com/links

Prescribed burns! Amazingly, 70% of conservation lands in Florida rely on regular fire! Some plants don’t even bloom without a fire. Many people don’t know about it, so I made this illustrated zine in 2018 to share some info and I’ve updated it over the years. It’s such a fascinating thing.

Scrub Jay with Sand Oak, watercolor, 12x17”

Inspired by Jonathan Dickinson State Park, and other at-risk scrub habitats. Florida Scrub Jays are only found in Florida! I’m told they eat the acorns from the sand oak trees!

Detail from Yuma The Florida Panther! Watercolor 36x42” Gopher tortoises are a keystone species in Florida. They dig burrows that many other species live in, including the burrowing owl (which doesn’t burrow its own holes and is completely dependent on tortoises) #gophertortoiseday

For “Draw a bird” day, may I offer you this whistling duck (watercolor, 16x16”) from my series Birds At Play, which were used to create a mural in the Mandel Library in West Palm Beach (info about the series and mural are on my blog!)

One of the common bird species we have in South Florida!

Awesome event at Dr. Von D Mizell-Eula Johnson state park! I didn’t know this park existed in Ft.Lauderdale until “parksgate”. It’s been great to get to know it.

Today I’m working on this Scrub Jay on Sand Oak painting. Refs for the bird is from Holly Youngblood Cannon. The plant refs I took at Jonathan Dickson State Park in an effort to familiarize myself with the habitat and with one of the parks that was recently at-risk for development #saveourparks

Bidens alba pattern! This is my first attempt at making a pattern and I have a few tweaks to make but I honestly love it. I’m gona paint all the elements then put it back together next.

I’m told that Bidens alba is one of the most important pollinator plants in Florida. Attracts 80ish bees right?

Today’s art! Split Oak forest is conservation land in Orange County Florida currently under threat of development. They’ve been fighting a toll road for almost a decade! I’m really proud of all the work they’ve done and are still doing ❤️ watercolor (with scrub jay and gopher tortoise)

Working on this sketch of cedar waxwings in a strangler fig tree! (Ficus aurea) I’m pretty sure my fig tree reference is the right species, but I’m not familiar with other types of fig trees in the area so I could be wrong 🤔 (this is in Broward county, Florida)
