Right. That’s about all the screen time my eyes can stand for this week.

Have a lovely Sunday, everyone!

I’m off to avert an apocalypse via audiobook.

#Middlegrade chat Q4 —

Either Drum Roll Please by Lisa Jenn Bigelow (bisexual representation) or Time Travelling with a Hamster by Ross Welford (Syndactyly representation).

Both would have caused a thunderclap of recognition if I’d read them as a child. I sorely lacked representation back then!

#Middlegrade chat Q3 — Linear or leapfrog?

Oh, I leapfrog around like it’s going out of style. Scenes, chapters, even paragraphs… absolutely nothing is written in order. I’m instead led by mood and topical inspiration.

Fortunately, as I’m a planner, I can throw things back in order pretty quickly.

#Middlegrade Chat Q2 — Chapter length!

My draft chapters usually range about 3k / 3.5k words but by the time I’m finished editing, they average between 2k-2.5k words, which is what I usually aim for.

#Middlegrade Chat Q1 — How is your writing week going?

Ha! Poorly (as I am post-op so am using my eyes sparingly). However, I did manage to write three scenes over the week just by squinting through my left eye and using voice-to-text. That’s… progress, right?

The typos are Future!Kim’s problem 😅
Hello, bonjour, and welcome to this Sunday's #MiddleGrade chat! I hope you've all had an absolutely wonderful week.

Question 1!

I’m back from my op! I still can’t see anything out of my right eye but it’s early days yet. 🤞

I have another six weeks to go until full recovery, so my messages will be intermittent.

Thank you to everyone for your audiobook recommendations ❤️ They’re keeping me sane whilst I avoid print & screens.

I’m heading in for the Big Eye Operation today (which MIGHT restore vision to my right eye—or make the blindness permanent, who knows?)

I’ve stocked up on #audiobooks for the recovery period, starting with the full cast version of #GoodOmens, but I could always use more.

Any recommendations?

Question 5 for Weekly #Middlegrade Writers Chat — Snippet Sunday: FRIEND

Question 4 for Weekly #Middlegrade Writers Chat — What’s the theme of your book(s)?

“You don’t need to be special to be worthy.” I’m fond of ‘Everyman’ heroes, so most of my stories include something similar.

Typically I also include found family, disability and / or queer rep, and grey morality.

Question 3 for Weekly #Middlegrade Writers Chat — Plotter or Pantser?

I’m a hardline plotter. I write my scenes out of order (it’s the only way anything gets done), so I need to know exactly what’s meant to happen in the scene beforehand. It might go off the rails when I start writing it though…

Question 2 for Weekly #Middlegrade Writers Chat — Current projects

1) I’ve just sent my first MG novel out to query (🤞)

2) I’m in the middle of line editing the sequel

3) I’m also outlining a queer (sapphic) adult historical crime romantasy, but it’s very early days for that!

I suppose it’s a good time to do this!

Hi #kidlituk_intro! I’m a children’s writer from the UK and my current project, The Elder Throne, is a middle grade fantasy based on British and Irish mythology. I’m currently querying it whilst editing the sequel, The Winter Court.

Here’s a bit about it!
