For all veterans, military families, & their friends, here is a bit of writing by a WWI veteran, found in my great-grandmother's desk. A very good Memorial-Day weekend to all.
Typewritten folded piece of paper atop an antique lap desk. It reads: “I went to a memorial day parade here this afternoon and saw a number of the boys there that were in the same regiment (103rd) that I was. Also a number of Indians. There is a sort of an Indian colony near here at Point Pleasant, and they come to Eastport each Memorial day, in full regalia. They certainly looked fine in the parade. It is a sad day though, and the solemnity of the procession touches deeply. Even now I cant help thinking of the fine fellows who gave their lives for their country, and the cause of humanity. It is very touching to see the sad reverence in which they are still held by those near and dear to them. I realize now perhaps as never before, that there still, and probably always will exist a tender thought for those boys who are gone. I had thought that the world in general had grown somewhat calused, but the open manifestations which I have seen today here have done much to dispel that line of thought, and have opened a new phase of life which perhaps I have over looked in the past. I wonder if Memorial day affects every one that way.”
