The central argument is that when a state experiences significant insecurity regarding its international identity, it has a strong strategic incentive to leverage progressive branding to enhance its status and leadership on the global stage.

To establish the presence of identity insecurity, I conducted a thematic analysis of Canadian foreign policy debates in the House of Commons from 2006 to 2017. I also introduce a typology of feminist branding, distinguishing between different types of commitment.
