Here’s a closer look. Females burrow into the sand, lay eggs, males surround them to fertilize. Female wiggles out of the hole (looks like a lot of work!) and everyone tries to get back to the ocean.
Eggs develop, hatch when stimulated by high tide about 10 days later, and wash out to the ocean.

It’s #GrunionRun season in southern California! For those who don’t know, grunion are a fish that comes onto the beach to lay and fertilize eggs. In CA it happens during high tides after a full or new moon in spring. We don’t know where they go after they return to the ocean! 🦑

She passed away 2+ weeks ago, so posting two of my favorites of her instead because the last several are too sad. She was a Very Special Dog, one of the best, sweetest, communicative, & most loving I’ve met.

Mine just passed on Monday. She was wonderful, brave, amazing, and resilient until the end. This is one of the best pictures I have of her.
