Strangers are scary, and being nice to them is often a good approach. In Japan, though, you may encounter a peculiar yōkai, the nopperabō (野箆坊). They appear normal but looking at them again, their face has disappeared! They love this prank. #WyrdWednesday

Beyond the betrayal and political ramifications of what took place in the Oval Office yesterday, there is something so vile in the attempted public humiliation of another person that sickens me to the core. I felt physically ill after watching just a short clip. Zelenskyy is a model of dignity.

In Indonesia, visit any religious ceremony, ritual offering, or burial and you will most likely see and smell “Bunga Tujuh Rupa” a collection of 7 flowers chosen for their symbolism, energies, and even their connections to ancestors and spirits of place. 1/2

Room 308 in West Java's Samudra Beach Hotel holds a shrine dedicated to Nyai Loro Kidul/Nyi Roro Kidul: supernatural Queen of the South Sea. Her name has many forms and numerous honorifics. Her majesty is venerated in Javanese myth & popular culture. 1/3

Just found myself pausing mid- essay on my darkest moments in my battle with social anxiety to chat with the barista in broken Indonesian. Last year I couldn't leave the house alone.

Chocho's every mood and movement is announced with grunts, grumbles, and sighs. He sounds more like an octogenarian than a dog nearing 3. I found his noises endlessly amusing until I realized today in a very public place that I make them too.

Outdoor events in Indonesia just might be helped by a pawang hujan or "rain shaman." Pawan hujan are hired, usually for modest amounts, to help ensure good weather. Some burn incense or make offerings while others depend solely on prayer.
