It was a jarring display of the ocean's force and climate impacts playing out in real time in a place that is special to so many. This quote from geologist Stan Riggs will stick with me.

“The ocean does not negotiate,” he said. “And that’s what we have to remember.”

A lot of folks denied that the storm would have any impacts and criticized local and state governments for closing beaches and ordering evacuations. But Erin's made it clear that there are reasons for taking these steps, even if a storm is churning further out at sea. Stay safe this season, people!

Coastal towns in the Southern and Mid-Atlantic U.S. have been most affected, especially the Outer Banks. The storm also lashed out on the Jersey shore, where around 50 people had to be rescued last night from severe flooding.

Some context: The NPS has been on a rollercoaster ride since Trump's inauguration. Employees were fired then rehired—only to face looming cuts again (per the Trump administration’s recently proposed budget)
