I do not know why more people aren’t talking about this YA series by Caroline O’Donoghue. It’s contemporary Irish witchy fantasy with lots of tarot, queer as all get out and the main antagonists are terfy religious assholes getting their due. Audio narration is delicious, too.

Writing scifi at the pub. In this instance scifi is defined by: has lots of spaceships

And Her Smile Will Untether The Universe by Gwendolyn Kiste. Not enough horror in this list! A phenomenal collection showing great range and darkness. If you read nothing else please go check out The Man In The Ambry - freaked me right out.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North. Original and extremely clever, North is a master of structures. Go in blind if you can.

The Diviners by Libra Bray. This series has everything and does all of it right: historical, multiple POV, original urban fantasy that isn’t afraid to get very dark. Great intersectionality, glorious in audio and stays consistently good across the four books

A Fire Upon the Deep. A classic for a reason. Still stuffed to the brim with strangeness and intersecting concepts in a space opera package.

Walter Moers does not get enough love from English readers. His books are fantastical, funny and *illustrated* adventures. Start with The City of Dreaming Books: an ode to books, stories and writing. Did I mention the protagonist is a dinosaur??

Another banger from this year’s reading: There Is No Antimemetics Division by qntm
Don’t let the fact it’s an SCP tie-in put you off, I’ve done basically zero SCP and was obsessed with this. Sci-fi horror that reinvents itself every chapter and takes its concept all the way to 11
