🖼️✨ Loved the Joseph Wright of Derby exhibition at the National Gallery. His use of light and shadow is mesmerising ❤️‍🔥 My favourites remain his great scientific scenes, where experiment becomes drama by candlelight 🕯️ www.nationalgallery.org.uk/exhibitions/...

The Origin wasn’t the book Darwin had been planning to write. It was a condensed abstract, born from years of research and a rush to publish after Wallace’s letter in 1858. It took just 13 months to draft, with ideas were backed by 20+ years of research.

Only few years after his returns from the voyage on HMS Beagle, Darwin wrote an unpublished sketch in 1842 and expanded it into an essay in 1844. These documents were early attempts to articulate his theory and included many ideas that would later appear in On the Origin of Species.

Only 3% of the original Origin of Species draft survives today. After publishing, Darwin discarded most of it as scrap paper, and his children even used the backs for doodles. Some sheets were rediscovered decades later and sold for staggering sums.

John Murray accepted ito publish without even reading the manuscript. Darwin wasn’t sure the book would be successful."I heartily hope that my book may be sufficiently successful that you may not repent of having undertaken it." Safe to safe that it was a gamble that paid off.
