Dave might be right, some Barnt Green streets need flags more than others. Or it could just be a case of 'don't sh*t on your own doorstep' of course. 🤔

He is in fact a neighbour & has not put flags up in his cul de sac, by his front gate or on the local roads leading to his house. Why not if he loves his flags do much? What has happened to that chap in Alvechurch is exactly why we have said nothing about the flagging in our village. D: Maybe the flags aren't needed there. It's best to put them in places where they are needed.

Statement from Labour MP for Selly Oak condemning the recent acts of vandalism and intimidation in Stirchley
I am deeply concerned and disappointed to learn of reports of vandalism and intimidation inflicted upon local businesses in Stirchley. These acts are wholly unacceptable and undermine the safety, security and well-being of our residents, visitors and workers. Stirchley has long been a vibrant, diverse and welcoming place where people from all backgrounds come together to live, work and shop. Our independent shops and businesses form the backbone of our local economy and contribute to the unique character and spirit of this area. When one business is targeted, the effect ripples through the whole community. I want to make clear: intimidation of residents or business owners will not be tolerated. I urge everyone in our community to stand together. Community cohesion, mutual respect and constructive dialogue are far more powerful than acts of intimidation. Let us reaffirm our commitment to a Stirchley where people feel safe and free to go about their daily lives without threat.

Brum in Brief: 🇬🇧 One of the two men behind the rise in Union Jack flags in south Birmingham has said he is ‘not ashamed’ to have attended an August protest outside a Solihull hotel housing asylum seekers. Elliot Stanley, 44, is the co-founder of raisethecolours.org (not a registered charity or company as The Dispatch recently revealed) which hoists flags, some reading “stop the boats” and “save our kids,” both here and around the country. Stanley has appeared on GB News several times to insist the campaign is not divisive or right wing but merely patriotic. After video footage emerged of him at the demonstration saying asylum seekers “shouldn’t be here,” the businessman has faced criticism from anti-racist campaigners. In an interview with Birmingham Live, Stanley doubles down, claiming his issue with “unvetted and undocumented males coming to this country” is uncontroversial. Stanley is used to the spotlight, having once taken part in a documentary about the sex doll company he used to run with his wife and 17-year-old son. Sex Doll Official — which both sold and rented out customised dolls — was run from the family home in Bromsgrove but folded during the pandemic.

BRIG Birmingham will not be divided The recent remarks by Robert Jenrick about 'seeing no white faces' in Handsworth are deeply irresponsible and reveal ore about his own worldview than about our city. Once again, we are dragged back into tired debates about "integration", "Britishness" and who belongs, as if being non-white somehow makes you less British. Handsworth has always been one of Birmingham's most diverse and multicultural communities, a place where people of every colour, faith and background live, work and trade side by side. To claim otherwise is not only inaccurate, but also designed to provoke division and resentment. If Mr Jenrick had looked a little closer, he would have seen the vibrant Eastern European shops, the Caribbean cafes, the South Asian grocers and the faith spaces that make the Soho Road one of the most culturally rich streets in Britain. Perhaps his "90-minute integration study", armed with a Dulux colour chart, missed that reality. The truth is this: Handsworth is not a slum, It is one of Birmingham's treasures; a community that has stood tall through decades of struggle and change. Rather than being maligned, it should be celebrated and placed firmly on the city's cultural and tourism map. BRIG Monday night's Pioneers Exhibition, launched by Birmingham Race Impact Group (BRIG) and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, reminded us of the generations who have faced down racism and defended our communities - people who have worked tirelessly to build the inclusive, resilient Birmingham we know today. Their stories, captured on the Beyond Racism website show the real face of this city: proud, diverse and enduring. Jagwant Johal, BRIG Founding Member said, "Birmingham has always been a city of welcome and resistance, a place where difference is not feared but celebrated. Handsworth, like so many of our neighbourhoods, is living proof that integration is not about exclusion. It's about mutual respect, shared struggle and collective belonging." Handsworth and Birmingham will not tolerate attempts to sow division. We stand united as Brummies, as neighbours, and as people who know that our diversity is our greatest strength.

Zaytuna Community Masjid 7 October 2025 PRESS RELEASE Zaytuna Community Mosque Targeted in Hate Crime On Sunday, Zaytuna Community Mosque at the Abrahamic Foundation in Birmingham was targeted in a malicious racist act of vandalism, causing significant damage to the exterior, including broken water lines and outdoor furniture. An attack on a place of worship is an attack on the entire community. It has left our congregation especially our women, children and elders feeling hurt, fearful, and shaken. This shameful act, rooted in hate and racism, does not reflect the city we know and love. Our community feels vulnerable, because we are vulnerable, but remain steadfast in our mission to serve and bring people together. We have reported the incident to police and are clear: this is a hate crime. It is part of a wider pattern of rising anti-Muslim hatred and violence, fuelled by divisive rhetoric and emboldened far-right extremism. This cannot become our new normal. We urge everyone to stay vigilant and report anything suspicious. Our leadership is here to support anyone experiencing anxiety or distress. Now is the time for action.
