I recommend Lisa Eldridge on YouTube for beginner tutorials. She doesn't do a lot of color but you can adapt her techniques to more interesting shades.

You also have to bear in mind that the people who write the synopses of Handel operas on Wikipedia have a certain sense of humor. So the "strange attraction to a lion" is a funny terse summary of "Oberto is looking for his dad and he feels like the lion is special, which he is because it's his dad".

I don't think the hippogriff is in the opera, but in any case I think it's more like a loyal horse than a loyal "horse".

The lion turns out to be Oberto's dad, who he's been trying to find. Alcina wants to turn Ricciardo (Bradamante in disguise) into an animal to get him out of the way.

It's a stretch. These have more to do with the mythological trope of sorceresses turning people into animals (like Circe) than furrydom.
