113 years ago today, Jim Thorpe became the first Native American to win Olympic gold. Born on the Sac and Fox Nation reservation in 1887, Thorpe overcame the loss of his family and the trauma of boarding schools to become a sports legend —playing in both the MLB and NFL until age 41.
