Are oil companies actually viable businesses if they need taxpayer subsidies and can’t pay their own taxes?
Or are they viable businesses BECAUSE of all the subsidies and tax breaks?

Except Harold Wilson who refused to send British troops to Vietnam despite President Johnson’s demands in 1966/67 - so it was and is possible to exercise some ‘backbone’.
