The referendum highlighted complexities in Danish relations to EU migration policy. This made the campaign a complicated affair, with a lot of debates about what the referendum was really about. The case thus illustrates some of the democratic challenges that come with the complexities of DI. 4/5

Migration has been linked to contestation of the EU in several recent referendums. This was also the case here, particularly with the Danish People's Party making such linkages. However, there was overall considerable debates about how and whether this was relevant for the referendum. 3/5

My chapter looks at the Danish referendum on the Justice and Home Affairs opt-out in 2015, asking what role migration played in the referendum campaign. The political majority tried to take migration off the agenda, but they were not successful in doing so. 2/5
