I’m reminded of the time I talked ChatGPT into justifying confiscating a migrant worker’s passport and administering corporal punishment for cooking eggs wrong.

Excitd to listen. For what it's worth, I found this three-year old email from Fred Jameson, one of the last times I corresponded with him.

I'd asked him what was good to read, and he said he was rereading Andrew Miller's Now We Shall Be Entirely Free. I'm not sure if he ended up writing about it.

There used to be a bar in Seoul (신촌) called The Doors, and when you entered you saw a painting of Jim Morrison. Except it was actually Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison.

Many students seem to think each submission’s baseline is a perfect grade and that every comment I give them is a deduction, so they nitpick every point instead is taking them as examples of larger trend. They seem to approach class with no sense of adventure or hope for transformation.

Spotted at a local festival in Wenzhou, China. Nice reminder not to reify the language of critique.

Jameson, A Singular Modernity, pg 170 talks about how “the ideology of modernism” is the idea that artistic expression is essentially about itself, and how it’s an essentially an anti-Stalinist reactionary political position. It’s only odd to see it here because now is 2024, not 1956.

Just learned that in Hangzhou, China, there is a bookstore called Ulysses that for its first two years of existence sold exclusively various editions of Joyce’s Ulysses.

Educational experts keep waving the term “discovery-led learning” around like a magic wand. Do they know it’s been at the heart of the humanities since Socrates? If they’re serious about this method, reduce class sizes.

How am I meant to grade “a technology map”? Do I tell students the “proper” route for using technology? If so, doesn’t that just invite the same sort of dishonestly I’m trying to curb? Sounds like a lot of wasted time for student and teacher.

Fascinating to find in China advertisements that would be denounced on cultural grounds were they in North America.

Finally getting around to this book, and it’s definitely engaging—I find myself variously nodding and frowning at Guillory’s account of the state of the discipline.
