FOIA Tip: internal emails reacting to stuff that just happened and which the agency can't do anything about are fun to request and are not deliberative. There's no cope or seethe exemption to FOIA
October 17, 2025 Dear FOIA Officer: Pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, 5 U.S.C. § 552, as amended, I request the following information and records from the Department of Justice (DOJ) U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia (USAO-DC). Background. Sidney Lori Reid was accused of assaulting FBI agent Eugenia Bates in July, 2025, outside DC Jail where she was filming Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, who were waiting to arrest two people. As she was filming, ICE officer Vincent Liang grabbed her arms and began to detain her against a wall. While he was struggling with Reid, Bates got involved. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia argued that though there was no contact, a jerk movement that Reid made with her knee near Bates’ groin during that struggle constitutes simple assault. The U.S. Attorney for D.C. sought to file felony charges against Reid thrice unsuccessfully before bringing the charge as a misdemeanor. The misdemeanor case was captioned United States v. Sydney Lori Reid, case number 25-cr-244-SLS in U.S. District Court for D.C. On October 16, 2025, around 1:35 p.m., the jury in that case returned a verdict of Not Guilty. This media coverage illustrates the public interest and context for the following: Requests. The following records, created between October 16-17, 2025 in the Criminal Division of USAO-DC, are requested: 1. Emails, text messages, and Teams chats sent by any USAO-DC supervisory attorney regarding Sydney Lori Reid or the verdict in 25-cr-244-SLS; 2. Emails, text messages, and Teams chats notifying U.S. Attorney Jeannine Pirro or her staff of the verdict in 25-cr-244-SLS; 3. Any reply to or forward of any record responsive to 1 or 2.

This case adds yet another unfortunate chapter to the story of artificial intelligencemisuse in the legal profession. Here, Defendants’ counsel not only included an AI-hallucinatedcitation and quotations in the summary judgment brief that led to the filing of this motion forsanctions, but also included multiple new AI-hallucinated citations and quotations inDefendants’ brief opposing this motion. In other words, counsel relied upon unvetted AI — inhis telling, via inadequately supervised colleagues — to defend his use of unvetted AI.

Egypt has crime they just don't report it, particularly wrt trafficking victims and refugees. From the Trafficking in Persons report the State Department (finally) released in September
the government did not meet the minimum standards in several key areas. The government investigated and prosecuted fewer trafficking crimes and identified fewer victims – the lowest number of victims identified in five years. Despite high trafficking risks for foreign nationals in Egypt, including Sudanese refugees fleeing conflict, authorities rarely proactively identified or provided services to non-Egyptian trafficking victims. The government relied on victims to self-identify or civil society to refer them to government services. Due to inadequate screening among vulnerable populations such as refugees and migrants, the government did not take effective measures to prevent the inappropriate penalization of potential victims solely for unlawful acts committed as a direct result of being trafficked, which contributed to ongoing distrust of authorities and reluctance to report trafficking cases.
