Either way, lay discussions of herd immunity seem to miss the nuances, yet they word is used as a bludgeon against more accurate definitions. This is rather depressing.

It's not my definition. And for an endemic seasonal pathogen, there is no peak, there are periodic outbreaks. Outbreaks and herd immunity are not mutually exclusive concepts, especially for a pathogen for which immunity wanes rapidly, i.e., the five endemic coronaviruses. Contrast this with measles.
