Special editions that we’re celebrating from 97 lasted about 7 years from what I can tell
The special editions of the original Star Wars trilogy (Episodes IV, V, and VI) were released in theaters in 1997 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of A New Hope. After these theatrical releases, George Lucas continued making changes for subsequent home media releases. Here’s a timeline of key updates after the special editions: 1. 2004 DVD Release: Major changes included updated visual effects, altered lightsaber colors, and additional scenes to align with the prequel trilogy. Notable was Hayden Christensen replacing Sebastian Shaw as Anakin’s Force ghost in Return of the Jedi. 2. 2011 Blu-ray Release: More tweaks were made, such as adding CGI eyelids to the Ewoks, altering Obi-Wan’s krayt dragon call in A New Hope, and refining various sound effects. 3. 2019 Disney+ Release: A minor but infamous change to A New Hope was added, where Greedo now says “Maclunkey” before being shot in the cantina scene. George Lucas was known for his persistent tinkering with the original trilogy, often stating that these changes were part of his creative vision. The last notable changes made while Lucas was actively involved were for the 2011 Blu-ray release. Subsequent tweaks, like the Disney+ change, occurred after Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012.
