Interesting study from the Institute Pasteur 🇫🇷 on excess mortality, controlling for age, in the first wave of Covid. UK, Spain doing pretty bad. Ireland is about average.

In the run-up to the election it can be interesting to know who turns out to vote. Using ESS data for Ireland, we can see that older, more educated and rural voters are more likely to vote as are married people. Those struggling money-wise or healthy-wise are less likely to vote.

I’m curious that the mortality rate is so high in Germany. Pleased it’s so low in Ireland.

GDP is the standard measure of how a macroeconomy is doing.There is one country where it is a useless measure: Ireland,especially since 2015. It’s because of the effect of a small number of large firms and their IP- mostly. We have a pretty good measure though Modified GNI or GNI*.
