Printers send things “scale to fit” because printers can’t print to the edge of the page (and often clients send documents with text going right to the edge that would otherwise get chopped off). So it often gets set as he default.

I think a good part of why it works is that it’s hand-lettered, with a conscious effort to minimize the height of the uppercase letters (much like Eddie Campbell’s mixed case hand lettering, which for me is another exception to the rule)
