Gaspar Van Vittel circa 1717 Accademia Carrara of Bergamo View of Vaprio d' Adda on the left and Canonica d'Adda on the right: taken from the house of the water keeper ( who took taxes and looked after the horses, for the journey to Milan). In those days the Adda River marked the border between the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice. Goods of all kinds arrived in Milan through the artificial canal called the Naviglio della Martesana. ...And now in 2025 Bernardo Bellotto 1722-1780. View of Vaprio d'Adda on the right and Canonica d'Adda on the left. On the right you can see the Martesana Canal leading toward Milan and in the center at the bottom the Casa del Custode delle Acque. Capodimonte Museum (Naples) Bernardo Bellotto 1744. By carefully staging the sunlight hitting the facades (in front la Casa del Custode delle Acque), rising above the Adda River, Bellotto picks out the north Italian villages of Canonica d’Adda at the right and Vaprio at the center-left.
