I don't blame the Dodgers for being aggressive and smart. Commissioner just needs to lock the loophole down for the whole league. Deferred $ simply needs to be amortized for luxury cap purposes. Owners will likely make tax more punitive as well.

and......one could look how it was used "Bonilla".......small deferments over time. One could be honest and evaluate how it used NOW.....mostly by Dodgers and clearly see how it impacts the goal of luxury. Not hard, dude.

"ownership" is a wide swath. Top team with big $ love it......the rest of league sees it as a way to subvert a rule that actually pays revenue share to them (look it up). Players can choose (i.e. Ohtani) but most can't. MLB depends on a competitive balance to make markets whole. hence Manfred

the Players Association is strong and has built leverage against a salary cap in MLB. Owners would love (as a whole) a cap. The deferred salary loophole further enhances the rich teams. So, most owners don't love it because it blows up the intended structure of the luxury tax..which pays them

the future value of the dollar is totally meaningless in this context. The impact is on current payroll/luxury tax. The Dodgers are using a loophole that subverts the intended purpose of the tax...which is to preserve competitive balance. Manfred has to power to close it...that was my point.

$46 instead of $70.......pretty impactful and greatly mitigates the luxury tax impact.

Small to Mid market teams rarely approach the tax apron....most are just cheap (i.e. the A's) It punishes cash rich teams. Once again, the "cash upfront" concept isn't real. Lots of dynamics with NFL contracts (for example) but the cap hit still sticks. Which is the concept of "dead money".
January 18, 2025 at 12:40 AM
First off, the NFL has a salary cap, so, not applicable in comparison. The deferral allows big money teams to spend a ton without trigging luxury tax, even though the time of service is current. Player salaries should be required to impact luxury.....as that gets very punitive.

fair but the commish needs to actually make decision that positively impact the league. For instance, the deferred $ loophole could and should very easily be closed.
