I put a small pump in just below the surface to keep a ice free vent hole. My pond is 32 inches deep so it won't freeze solid. (I did a bit of research before building it.) At that depth, i leave the fish right in it. No koi, just feeder goldfish from the pet store. Started with 2 dozen, lots now.
