Seriously… even if this is automated… having a fuc*ing word with yourselves about appropriate settings etc. All tech is social, and this is grossly anti-

I’ve written a novel based there, drawing on themes of rising sea levels… and the rise of the right, centred on the 1953 flood that devastated the place. Just looking for the right publisher… ;)

Great to be in Parliament today with people from across the creative industries to discuss @bectu.bsky.social’s excellent report on pay levels and working conditions! More important than ever that this powerhouse of the UK economy is supported and sustained through this period of rapid change.

Privilege to be in Brussels, meeting with economists, policymakers, academics and trade unionists in the very room where Marx wrote his Communist Manifesto to discuss the #FutureOfWork and social democracy.

Great to be in Liverpool today with @eyfoundation.bsky.social for expert round table of MPs, careers support specialists and firms presenting on how young people from lower-income backgrounds can access better jobs in this era of AI turbulence. Motivation is key, as is time for reflective practice.

The gods of small things.
Interesting to see this come to pass (and further post on how AI has basically now consumed everything so… what next?) - something I talk about in my book, God-like: a 500-Year History of AI

A huge cultural presence in both the US and UK, his death was almost completely overshadowed by the assassination of JFK, which happened on the same day... as did the death of another towering figure: C.S. Lewis.
The questions each raised about our place in a theo-technological world still resonate.

Huxley was suffering greatly at the end of his life, and asked his wife to speed his death with one last LSD trip. His work interweaving technology, religion and the power of psychedelics was hugely prescient - a story I tell in my book Getting High. www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=getting+...

A story of a man’s slow descent into violent madness, and then one of the violence of powerful men descending on a woman who pretends to give birth to rabbits. Thank you,
@galleybeggars.bsky.social, the novel is gloriously, riotously, alive and kicking 👏 🐇 🤬 🐇 🤬👏 (PS people, become a Galley Buddy!)

Here's my great grandfather - a Stepney boy who was apprenticed to a surveyor aged 14 - sitting on the veranda of his chalet in Jaywick Sands with his old friend George Lansbury, a fellow East End boy done good, and one of the greatest social reformers of the 20th century.

Lot's of cross-currents here for me, having helped design and lead action-research workshops with young people talking about their future hopes... and a novel I've got in the works set in a working class seaside community that my great-grandfather built in the 1930s... and smashed by floods in 1953.
