Eighteen years ago since I climbed my first mountain with these legends. Snowdon, in the mist, left behind by the menfolk. A formative experience for both good and bad, and a key driver behind the writing of what would become Wanderers #BookSky

Today has been properly mad in the best ways. Tonight I got to be at the programme launch for the Edinburgh Book Festival where I mingled* with the stars. And then THE Alan Cumming does a skit with my book to promote tomorrow’s talk 🤪

*stood nervously nearby too scared to talk to my writing heroes

It’s been a bit quiet with Pathfinding-I’ve definitely experienced the effects of the general non-fiction difficulties-and I’ve felt sad about not having many events yet. But then something like this comes through. Despite my worries the book is finding readers, and look what happens. #BookSky

It’s almost a week since I set off to Hamburg. I’d never been to Germany before, and I really enjoyed myself. I was made so welcome, had the opportunity to give my first keynote, a true professional milestone + meet some really lovely people in a beautiful city. Thank you @sandradinter.bsky.social

It’s Mothering Sunday in the UK tomorrow. I’ll be returning from a conference in Hamburg; if, like me, you’ve been a bit distracted, fear not! Pathfinding might just be the perfect gift. Dive into your local independent bookshop to find it.

Found some nice rocks in Carlisle upon which to pose my book. What a lovely day walking and talking with Sam, Mel and the gang courtesy of @bookendscarlisle.bsky.social #BookSky

I was made very welcome today at Topping & Co Edinburgh. *Sixty* copies of Pathfinding have now been signed, alongside quite a few copies of Wanderers. Pop in if you’re in the area and fancy an autographed first edition of my new book!

I had such a lovely evening last night launching Pathfinding with the gorgeous @wedale-bookshop.bsky.social at Stow’s Cloudhouse Cafe. A number of the people I walked with in the book were there, including some of the women who have become mothers to me. It was perfect. Thank you Gordy! #BookSky

I’m celebrating #InternationalWomensDay by going for a walk and climbing a hill. I’m sat at the top in glorious sunshine with skylarks for company. This is where I am most free.

I’m heading home from a truly incredible 48 hours in Kilmartin. Apart from cocking up the museum opening times (to which I will need to return) I couldn’t have had a better time. This morning: atop Dunadd citadel in a brisk nor’wester, hooting like a banshee and feeling like the queen of Scotland.

Well that was one of the nicest walks I’ve ever had. Rootling about all over Kilmartin Glen, thinking about our ancestors, and the love they had for this place and each other. What extraordinary things they made. Being here is proving wonderful for my soul.

Would you look at this? I can't wait for this book to be in the world and in your hands in March. Profound thanks to Helen for her generous and beautiful response.

Here it is! The cover of my new book, Pathfinding: On Walking, Motherhood and Freedom. The cover was designed by the fabulous Rafaela Romaya and evokes the purple of the hillsides in Scotland in August. I can't wait to share this book with you, just in time for Mothers' Day in March.

Look who’s arrived!! Paperbacks of Nan Shepherd’s Correspondence exist and will be out in the world soon. Look out for events this autumn and please get in touch if you’d like me to do an event for you. The paperback is a reasonable price and perfect for the Nan fan in your life this Christmas!

I’m so delighted that Wanderers has reached this amazing milestone. I have been very lucky to have found a community of readers and walkers who have really taken it to their hearts. Enormous thanks to the independent bookshops who have stocked and supported it. Couldn’t have done it without you.

Published this week, and arriving at my house this moment, is this beauty. I hope you’ll agree that, like the cover picture, this book reveals a Nan Shepherd we’ve not known before. Delighted with the classy cover and production courtesy of Edinburgh University Press
