Arcade fighting games present a very poetic and symbol based method of storytelling. It allows for players to use their imagination to develop their own ideas and plots based on their experiences. this is a beautiful approach to crafting worlds, one I hope can be preserved :)

These components poetically relate to the plot of LB2, in which the Gates of Hell have opened causing the world of the living and the dead to overlap. LB2 expresses this drama less through direct plot and more through the affects of the games art and short interstitial titles between battles.

In the mid-plane a shelter illuminated by golden rays of sun cuts some light in the otherwise dark environment. This beacon of hope exists between the games violent fighting and the brewing darkness of the BG. Despite the threats to the word, there’s pockets of safety which offer refuge.

In Shrine of the Vanquished’s BG, an ominous force produces a storm. This is the cause of the rain in the foreground plane of the stage where the games player action takes place. To me, this signals the relation between the character’s action and the larger forces motivating the characters/plot.

In the 90s, teams developed methods of conveying stories and motifs via less direct, often poetic devices. LB2 is an apex in the SNKs team with these forms of expression, and we can see the complexity of their work by examining the relationship between the different planes of the game’s stages
